Are Anxiety and Stress the same thing?

Anxiety and stress are cousins

But not the same

Anxiety is an underlying state. A tendency to be on red alert.

Stress is pressure inflicted from the outside or inside.

In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy we use the metaphor of a stress bucket.

We all carry one with us.

We need a bit of stress at the bottom of the bucket. AKA motivation.

(Otherwise we’d stay under the warm duvet all day)

But we also need spare capacity between the stress level and the top of the bucket.

To process whatever the world throws at us.

If the level is constantly too high, then the bucket overflows.

We can reduce stress levels

– by positive thinking

– by setting personal boundaries

– with good sleep length and quality

– by increasing feelings of self confidence

– by amplifying feelings of happiness and well being

And then the state of red alert softens and relaxes too.
